Prayer and politics!

By Celia Bowring, Communications Executive, CARE

How can we pray effectively into this complicated, problematic area of national life? This year has been like a whirlwind: the snap General Election and so many changes in leadership, Brexit getting off the ground and problems in the Northern Ireland Assembly, to mention a few events. We need to be inspired, informed and specific.

I Timothy 2:1 (Message) urges us to ‘pray especially for rulers and their governments to rule well so we can be quietly about our business of living simply, in humble contemplation.’ This is a great place to start.  So perhaps you could create a list of national and local leaders to lift to God in prayer.

What are the issues close to your heart – the environment, the persecuted church or the widening gap between rich and poor in this country? As you pray about these please include some of the concerns we have in CARE too.

  • October 27 marks 50 years since the Abortion Act. Over 8 million unborn lives have been lost and countless women have suffered. Pray that plans to make abortion even more accessible but without necessary safeguards will fail.
  • UK Parliaments and Assemblies have all passed anti-trafficking laws but more action is needed for rescued victims, especially children, to help them rebuild their shattered lives. Pray Lord McColl’s Bill addressing this will succeed.
  • Problem gambling is increasing. Pray the government will urgently act to protect the vulnerable, especially Fixed Odds Betting Terminals users – the ‘crack cocaine’ of gambling.
  • Religious freedom, particularly employee rights to act according to their conscience, is under threat. Pray for justice to prevail so that Christians will not be marginalised and restricted in their speech.

What is CARE?

CARE brings a Christian perspective on issues touching on the truth that human beings made in God’s image are precious and need our protection. We do this through expert briefings and support to politicians in all the UK Parliaments and Assemblies on matters such as human trafficking and sexual exploitation, abortion, euthanasia, addictions, religious freedoms, family life and bioethical concerns. We encourage and equip Christians to be salt and light in society through prayer and practical engagement.

CARE’s Prayer Diary provides fuel for intercession on wide-ranging topics and is freely available in both digital and printed formats.
